Tense

Hi classs. Today I'm going to explain about 'tenses'.

                   What is 'tense'??

Let teacher explain.

tense is a 'verb' form that shows the time of an action, event or state, by a change in its form and/or the use of a helping verb.

There are 3 tenses which are present tense, past tense and future tense.

Present tense expresses an action that is currently going on or happening. For an example, you are 'reading' my blog now. Things that happening now is present tense.

Past tense expresses an action that has happened. For an example, you 'studied' at school on last Wednesday. Last Weekend has already happened. Things that already happened is past tense.

Future tense expresses an action that has not yet happened. For an example, you will 'go' to school tomorrow. Tomorrow has not yet happen. So things that not yet happen is future tenses.

Now let's see how a verb changes as the tense changes.

Simple present tense:

In present tense, when the subject is singular , alphabet 's' behind the verb. But, when the subject is plural, the original verb will be use the 'root word' which is the original form of word.

Rohan run around the field daily.

Rohan and Rina run around the field daily.

Present continuous tense:

In present continuous tense, 'ing' will be added behind the verb. When the subject is singular(1), 'is' will be in front of the verb and when the subject is plural(more than 1), 'are' will be before the verb.

Harjith (singular) is reading his favorite story book now.

Riana and her (plural) sisters are singing in the room right now.

3..............2..............1.................

Alright, Let's continue then..

Now we going to see past tense.

Past tense:

In past tense the verb will be changed into a new word or 'd', 'ed', or 'ied' will be added at the back of the verb.

RUN:Rohan ran around the field yesterday.

SEE: I saw you last night.

WAKE: I woke up late this morning.

WALK: We walked home last week.

BAKE: I baked a cake with my mother. (normally, verbs that end with 'e' will be added 'd' in the end in past tense).

CRY: The baby cried for milk just now. (normally, verbs that end with 'y' will change to 'ied' in past tense).

past continuous tense:

In past continuous tense, the verb would not change. But, it will have 'ing' in the back as same as present continuous tense. Moreover,  when the subject is 'singular'(1), 'was' will be in front of the verb and when the subject is 'plural'(more than 1), 'were' will be before the verb.

Write: Michael (singular was writing an essay.

Ride: Shiela (singularwas riding a bicycle. (v 'e' behind the verb will disappear when the 'ing' has added).

Drink: The elephants (pluralwere drinking water.

5.........4.........3..........2..........1...........

Future tense:

In future tense, the word 'will' will be added before the verb. All the verbs in future tense will be in it's original form (root word).

Write: I will write my essay tomorrow.

Dance: We will dance at the party tonight.

Walk: Erick will walk with me on coming Tuesdsy.
